Kids Eat Right Month

Kids Eat Right Month

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and its foundation announces the first Kids Eat Right Month.

LAMAR, MO.--- "Know that it takes kids multiple times of just offering the food over and over again before they'll even try it, let alone admit that they like it, but involve the whole family," said Jessica Howdyshell, registered dietitian.

Health experts say Kids Eat Right Month will push families, communities, and even schools in the right direction to help improve children's health.

"Sometimes the parents aren't doing the right things at home and so part of our job as a school system is to encourage healthy eating, healthy diet for the future," said Diana Ball, Lamar School District Head Nurse.

School districts like Lamar are implementing policies to provide better diet choices for students. One of those steps is cutting off Coke and other sugary drink machines while kids are in school.

"We are shutting off the Gatorade machines, so the students can't have access to Gatorade during the school day, at least through our vending machines anyway," said  Ball.

While educators are an important role model, health experts say right now is the perfect time for parents to start thinking about cooking healthy and after school activities.

"Rather than just sitting in front of the television or playing video games, but just getting outside, burning off some energy, burning some calories and being active and they can do that as a whole family," said Howdyshell.

She adds the perfect place to start is an example called "my plate."

"The plate is divided into sections, where part of it would be their lean protein and part of it would be their grains and starches, and part of it would be fruits and vegetables with a serving of diary," said Howdyshell.

Kids Eat Right was created in 2010. It provides healthy resources and information for the public to encourage healthful eating among children and families. The program supports efforts of the White House to end the childhood obesity epidemic within a generation. You can find out more information by clicking here
