Kansas Motor Vehicle Deaths Same as Last Year

61 motor vehicle deaths so far this year.
PITTSBURG, KS --- A Kansas Department of Transportation representative says the number of deaths on Kansas roads so far this year is the same as last year.

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, there have been 61 motor vehicle deaths in Kansas as of March 20th.  KDOT Area Engineer George Dockery says Kansas roads are the safest they've been in 15 years.  He says most accidents occur because drivers get distracted and lose focus on the road.

"If you are driving at 65 miles per hour and you glance down at your cell phone at a text for six seconds, you've already traveled the length of a football field without even watching were you are going," Dockery said.

There were 349 motor vehicle deaths in Kansas last year.
