JOPLIN, MO.--- Joplin police are conducting a DWI checkpoint this weekend. Impaired driving contributes to nearly 30% of all Missouri traffic fatalities. In 2011, 218 people were killed and 867 were seriously injured in crashes involving drunk driving. The Joplin Police Department is trying its best to reduce those numbers with a checkpoint.
"Come up with that plan before you go out. Don't wait until after you've had one or two drinks and then decide to have a plan. And then drink responsibly, be safe. Be courteous to another drivers on the road," said Lt. Darren Gallup, Joplin Police Department.
Some consequences with drunk driving are jail time, losing your drivers license, and maybe even your job.
