JOPLIN, MO.--- Some organizations are in need of items that you may not be aware of. Food pantries like Souls Harbor need everything from food to everyday essentials. When we think of donating to food pantries, we think of canned items. The staff at Souls Harbor says the need is much greater than that.
"People don't commonly think that they are meeting needs in the community," said Georgia Jones, Souls Harbor Director.
Donors assume canned food is the hot items local food banks and organizations need. It's actually not. Shampoo, toilet paper, canned meat, and diapers are just some of the "must haves" at Souls Harbor along with other items.
"We also try to put in some powered milk or something like that. We don't always have that. It's hard to eat cereal dry all the time," said Jones.
Household items are also much needed.
"Like all purpose cleaner, and dish soap, and laundry soap. We go through a lot of laundry soap in distributing to the people who have needs around here," said Jones.
Nail polish, baby toys, and chocolate aren't exactly must haves, but representatives with Souls Harbor think these are nice to have.
"Those aren't necessities to life, but they sure do help when you're on the bottom of things and you're trying to crawl out," said Jones.
Jerry Gilstrap is a volunteer and says going to the store is a good time to pick up an item.
"The simplest thing is going to the dollar store and buying, you know, a 30-pack toilet paper and just bringing it in the door because somebody doesn't have that," said Jerry Gilstrap, Souls Harbor Volunteer.
60% of Souls Harbor's freezers are empty. They are in need of frozen meats like sausage, beef, and chicken. If anyone would like to donate, you can drop off items at Souls Harbor located on Main Street.
