JOPLIN, MO.--- The price to adopt a new puppy at the Joplin Humane Society is going up. Starting this month, the puppy adoption price is going up to $100. Also, to adopt the popular breed of puppies, including bulldogs or yorkies, is now $125. The previous cost was $85 dollars.
The reason for the increase is to offset the increased cost of housing the older dogs and cats. The puppies often get adopted quicker and will bring more money in. Organizers say the cost of living has increased and they have to re-coup the costs somehow.
"Most of our medical has gone up. The drugs we use in our spay and neuter clinic, those prices have gone up. The vaccine prices have gone up. We have to pay out electric bill like everyone else and heat," said Lysa Boston, Shelter Manager.
Managers say it's estimated that it costs $2,500 a day to keep the shelter open.
