JOPLIN, MO.--- The Joplin Humane Society has between 350 to 400 dogs and cats. Some waiting to be adopted while others have just lost their way home.
"We actually go through 500 pounds of pet food every single day, we do 12,000 pounds of laundry everyday. It cost $25,000 just to keep the building open," said Lysa Boston, Joplin Humane Society Shelter Manager.
Which is why they need your help in keeping the essentials stacked to the fullest.
"One of the biggest things that helps of course, as with any nonprofit, would be cash donations. Tremendously appreciated, but we're also always in need of physical donations of items too," said Boston.
Like canned food items. It's something they don't get very often, but it's greatly needed.
"It's fed to our puppies, kittens, and older dogs who can't chew on the crunchy food," she said.
They also need the basics, items already in your home.
"We go through four cases of paper towels every week, that's a lot of paper towels. So donating paper towels helps us because, if we can use that money elsewhere on the pets, of course, it makes a lot more sense for us rather than buy more paper towels," she said.
They also need laundry detergent and bleach, but above all, they need volunteers.
"We work really hard to find dogs homes, but sometimes it takes awhile. And when we have dogs that stay three months, four months, they can get very stressed in the kennel. So outside exercise and entertainment is really important for them," said Boston.
If big dogs are not for you, that's okay.
"A lot people come in and want to do nothing except brush cats. Sit in a nice quiet room and brush some cats. It's a great way to take off the stress from the day. And if cleaning is your thing, we can definitely use some cleaning help," she said.
