JOPLIN, MO.--- From backhoes and concrete work to light switches and electrical outlets, there's a wide range of work going on at the Joplin High School construction site. In some spots, the building is pretty much ready for class. In others, there's still a long way to go.
"One side of the building, doing interior finishes, laying flooring, painting - kind of punch list items. And then on the other half of the building, given the size of it, we're still doing some rough in," said Jason Bishop, Universal Construction Company On Site Manager.
It takes anywhere from 300 to 400 workers on campus each day. At this point, they've got 11 weeks to work with.
"We've set a goal and we intend to meet that goal. This building won't be completely done, we knew that. The Performing Arts Center won't be online yet when we start the school year, but everything else should be close to being functional at that point in time," said Dr. C.J. Huff, Joplin School's Superintendent.
Much closer to completion is the main gymnasium. Seating 25 hundred people, it will be home to basketball, volleyball and much more.
"We've got a lot of amenities here that we didn't have in the old high school. We made a strong commitment early on to build back bigger and better, and we're certainly doing that from a facilities standpoint and more importantly programatically," said Dr. Huff.
Many of the classrooms are all but done, with floors, fixtures and lighting in place. Since there's still much to be completed in other areas, the school will be restricting the site to necessary personnel.
"Once we get the high school opened up, get the kids in here, get them oriented to the facility, get some projects underway. We'll be opening our doors to our community at that point. We're planning right now for a ribbon cutting some time in September, October after we've settled into the facility and have something to show our community in terms of learning going on," said Dr. Huff.
