Joplin City Officials Prepare for Winter Storm

With winter weather in the forecast, Joplin City workers prepare to clear hazardous roads.
JOPLIN, MO --- With winter weather in the forecast, Joplin City workers prepare to clear hazardous roads. Officials with the Public Works Department say this is no easy task. The same crews and equipment used to clear the roads are also used for tree limb pick-up. That means to be prepared for the weather, they have to take some of the trucks used for the limb removal and equip them for winter storms ahead of time, putting limb and leaf pick-up on hold.

"We had been running the trucks around to pick up the limbs and the leaves, so we've taken some of those trucks, and we've already put the snow boxes on," said Lynden Lawson, Joplin Assistant Director of Public Works and Operations.

Officials say they've also gotten some new salt - as well as fabricated manufactured sand - to lay down on the roads in case they get slick this week.
