CARTHAGE, MO.--- Property theft is hitting rural Jasper County farm owners, and the target is their fencing. The sheriff's office has received reports about metal posts taken from rural and secluded parts of the county. The sheriff says they are still trying to figure out why.
"It's a little bit of a mystery as to why these posts are being stolen," said Randee Kaiser, Jasper County Sheriff.
Jasper County Sheriff Randee Kaiser says they've received reports about stolen fencing in the past couple of weeks. Five or six of these posts are stolen at a time.
"It's mainly rural areas in the southeast part of the county, areas that are more secluded areas of homes, areas that contain cattle or livestock," said Sheriff Kaiser.
While there have been just two cases reported so far, investigators believe there have been more that have gone unreported.
"We assume that there are other things going on there, and we will look into that as well," said Sheriff Kaiser.
The sheriff suspects it's either one person or a group of people committing the crime. Investigators are still trying to figure out why.
"One thing that crossed our minds was perhaps they are stealing the posts in preparation for coming back later and stealing the cattle, but in at least one or two of the areas they aren't even conducive to that," said Sheriff Kaiser.
Kaiser reminds the public to be on the lookout for any suspicious activity or vehicles.
"Make sure they monitor their fences and their gates to prevent that kind of activity," said Sheriff Kaiser.
If this type of theft has happened to you, the sheriff asks you to report it to their office. Any report will aid them in the investigation. You can call the Jasper County Sheriff's Office at 417-358-8177.
