More food and less exercise, it's a bad habit many of us fall into during the holidays.
JOPLIN, MO---One study says Americans average up to five pounds of weight gained in the next month.  Holiday meals don't have to be high calorie, but there are so many good foods that are so bad for our health.
"While turkey isn't very high in calories, the skin is.  So the skin of the turkey, mashed potatoes.  Gravy is made from the drippings so that is high in calories.  Candied yams and sweet potato casserole are popular dishes at Thanksgiving and one serving of that can be 400 calories.  And pecan pie of course, one serving is 800 calories," says Freeman Clinical Dietitian Kristen Woodruff.
Smart strategies can help you enjoy that special meal and limit the impact to your waistline.
"Some people can have a couple of bites of high calorie food and be satisfied and so for those people, you don't have to stop eating those foods altogether during the holidays.  But if you're the kind of person that has a couple of bites and can't stop, it might be a good idea to avoid some of those foods," Woodruff says.
You might also consider making some substitutions.
"You can eat the breast of the turkey instead of the dark meat.  You can avoid the skin because that's where most of the calories are.  You can make your mashed potatoes with skim milk instead of cream or sour cream added.  You can prep your stuffing on the stove instead of the bird and it will have less calories," she says.
