Head Start Program- May 28, 2014

Bud Reed and Robert Bond explain the mission of the Head Program program and how families qualify.
THE MISSION OF HEAD START IS TO HELP PARENTS AND THE COMMUNITY BUILD A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR THE CHILDREN OF FAMILIES IN THE LOWER 20% OF THE INCOME RANGE IN OUR FOUR COUNTIES IN SOUTHWEST MISSIOURI.
THERE'S AN "ACHIEVEMENT GAP" BETWEEN THE KIDS OF THE UPPER 20 PERCENTILE AND THE LOWER 20 PERCENTILE RANGING FROM A 25% DEFERENTIAL TO AS MUCH AS 500%.

AN EXAMPLE: OF THE HIGHER 20%, 68% OF THE PRE-KINDERGARTEN CHILDREN CAN COUNT TO 20. OF THE LOWER 20%, ONLY 48% CAN. THAT 20-POINT SPREAD CAN REALLY DISCOURAGE AND CONFUSE A CHILD OF FIVE.

3/4 OF THE CHILDREN FROM HIGHER INCOME FAMILIES CAN WRITE THEIR OWN NAME. ABOUT HALF THE CHILDREN FROM THE LOWER INCOME FAMILIES CAN.

TWICE AS MANY UPPER INCOME KIDS RECOGNIZE THE LETTERS OF THE ALPHABET.

UPPER INCOME KIDS ARE READ TO 4 TIMES MORE THAN LOWER AND CHILDREN FROM PROFESSIONAL FAMILIES ARE ESTIMATED TO HAVE HEARD 32 MILLION MORE WORDS BY THE AGE OF 4 THAN CHILDREN FROM WELFARE FAMILIES.

THE THRUST OF HEAD START IS TO IMPACT THE PERSPECTIVE OF PARENTS REGARDING THEIR ROLE AS PRIMARY AND LIFELONG TEACHER OF THEIR CHILDREN THROUGH PARTNERING WITH THEM AT HOME, IN THE COMMUNITY AND IN THE CLASSROOM.

ESTABLISH ROUTINES-CONSISTENT, HEALTHY ROUTINES HELP CHILDREN TO LEARN TO CONTROL THEIR BEHAVIOR, GIVE THEM IMPROVED REST AND RELIEVE FAMILY STRESS. CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES REINFORCE THE IMPORTANCE OF ROUTINES. FRS'S HELP PARENTS SET AND MONITOR GOALS TO REINFORCE THIS PRINCIPLE.

POSITIVE DISCIPLINE-TEACHING CHILDREN WHAT TO DO, RATHER THAN THE CONSTANT, "DON'T DO" AND "STOP IT". SHOWING THEM IN WORD PICTURES OF WHAT TO DO HELPS THEM MOVE INTO POSITIVE DISCIPLINE. TEACHERS AND AIDES ALWAYS EMPLOY POSITIVE DISCIPLINE TECHNIQUES IN CLASS, ON THE PLAYGROUND AND ON BUSES. FRS'S SECURE TRAINING FOR PARENTS.

LANGUAGE RICH EXPERIENCE-TEACHING PARENTS TO TALK WITH CHILDREN WHILE THEY DO EVERYDAY TASKS, DESCRIBING IN WORDS WHAT'S GOING ON. STAFF ALWAYS PROVIDE WORD PICTURES OF WHAT IS BEING DONE AND WHY IT'S DONE THAT WAY.

LITERACY-GET PARENTS TO READ TO CHILDREN EVERY NIGHT BEFORE BED. PART OF THE CLASSROOM ROUTINE IS A TIME TO SHARE A BOOK ALOUD WITH THE CLASS..AND EVENTUALLY, ONE OF THE STUDENTS WILL SIT IN FRONT AND SHARE THE BOOK WITH THE CLASS. FRS'S HELP PARENTS SOURCE BOOKS AND VIDEOS TO SUPPORT THIS VENUE.
