GROVE, OK.--- "We have a lot of large jets that land here, a lot more that want to land here, but we're just really busting at the seams. We need more room," said Lisa Jewett, Grove Municipal Airport Manager.
The Grove Municipal Airport has begun its $1 million project on a new 4,500 square foot terminal building that has been in the making for nearly six years.
"We have a lot of people that want to build hangers here. Physically, we're running out of room over here on this side of the airport," said Jewett.
Grove Municipal Airport Manager Lisa Jewett says with the industrial park right behind them, increases the demand for more room as businesses come in and out.
"We're going to go from the east side across the runway to the west side of the airport, and we're going to continue to develop this west side of the airport," she said.
This is for new potential retailers and restaurants to open up.
"We've got lots of different people wanting to build around and in this area because the airport is here," she said.
That's not all, the airport is also starting a $2 million apron and taxiway project with a new access road.
"This will be the new access road coming off Ford Road by the high school. This will be the new parking area and then we'll have a brand new parking area for the jets and the airplanes, the apron with a new taxiway overlay," she said.
Jewett says they currently have 22 T-hangers and 27 private hangers, but there still isn't enough space for people wanting to park their plane for business or pleasure.
"We have a waiting list. I have a waiting list of people that want to house their airplanes here," she said.
This is why these projects will give economic development for the city plus growth for the airport.
"Sometimes the airport is the first thing your community sees or the first thing a person sees about your community," said Jewett.
The project for the new terminal facility is being funded by the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission and the FAA. The building is expected to be completed on December 21st. The taxiway and new apron should be completed in the first quarter of next year.
