Good Samaritan Calls for Community Support for Joplin Fire Victims

A local man has stepped in to collect donations, so the family can start putting the pieces back together.
JOPLIN, MO.--- A good samaritan is calling on community support for a Joplin family who lost everything in a fire. They are still in shock about it all, and they were at the scene of the fire today searching for some of their belongings. A local man has stepped in to collect donations, so the family can start putting the pieces back together.

"There's nothing left in our home," said Brandy Harris, House Fire Victim.

Earlier this month, a fire destroyed Brandy Harris's home off of North Turk in Joplin.

"My kids could've not made it out. My husband could have not made it out. It was just minutes, minutes and I wouldn't have my family," said Harris.

David Lewis saw the fire happen.

"Seeing the fire, seeing the lights, it's a traumatic experience for anyone," said David Lewis, Good Samaritan.

He remembers at age three when his family's house caught fire.

"We lost everything. Being three years old and stuck in a closet, it was pretty traumatic," said Lewis.

Lewis didn't know Brandy's family, but he knew he wanted to help.

"It's the miracle of the human spirit. You got to help out where you can, because who knows, it could've been my family," said Lewis.

He's collecting donations for the family, he's already gathered clothing and a TV.

"We want to show everyone that you don't just simply forget small disasters," said Lewis.

Staff at the kid's school are also reaching out.

"The kids school came through, got the kids some clothes and toys yesterday, they actually surprised us with a little assembly," said Harris.

Harris says everyone's support means a lot to her family.

"It means there's still good people. There's still good in the world," said Harris.

The family is in need of clothing for a 13-year-old boy and 9 and 6-year-old girl. Lewis says they will be accepting clothing, gift cards at Missouri Title Loans 1225 S Rangeline Joplin, MO.
