GIRARD, KS.--- The Transportation Alternative Grant will help fund a streetscape proposal in the downtown square area. The total cost is estimated at more than $1.5 million, but the Kansas Department of Transportation is funding 80% of it. Improvements will include new sidewalks, street lights, curb and guttering, as well as trash cans and benches.
"We were very surprised to get $1.5 million to put this project together. The community is very excited, very happy," said Larry Dillon, Girard City Administrator.
Before construction can begin, the grant must be approved by the city council. Although KDOT is paying for the majority of the project, the city would still have to pay for the remaining $400,000.
