Galena Fiber Optic Network Installation

Galena Fiber Optic Network Installation

The City of Galena is preparing to step into the 21st century with improved internet access.
GALENA, KS.--- "Internet, cable TV, telephone, services like that are all going to be provided over one fiber to each of these locations," said Rodney Oels, project supervisor.

Work crews from Optic Communications began drilling at the Galena City Hall and EMS building. They are working to lay a fiber optic network throughout the city, in hopes of improving the city's internet access.

"The benefits are going to be a very reliable service, the benefits are going to be a faster service, and most definitely competitive pricing is coming to town with Optic Communications," said Oels.

Galena will be the second city in Cherokee County, behind Columbus, to have a fiber optic network. Mayor Dale Oglesby says it makes the City of Galena more appealing to businesses looking to invest in the area.

"Move your business into Cherokee County, specifically into Columbus or Galena, we'll offer you the finest high speed technology, communications technology that's available," said Dale Oglesby, Mayor of Galena.

Doug Gatewood serves on the city's Economic Development Committee and says a fiber optic network will improve operations at a countless number of businesses.

"You have to have the infrastructure to recruit businesses and to retain the people that you've got. This is going to be the best retention tool that we have and it's certainly going to be a great recruiting tool for more business to come in, because they'll see the opportunity that Galena and this community offers," said Doug Gatewood, Economic Development Committee.

This is an ongoing project that will take the next several years to complete. Crews say their next location for drilling will be at schools, businesses and hospitals.
