JOPLIN, MO.--- A local environmental group is issuing a warning about potential air quality problems in the Joplin area. The Four States Clean Air Alliance says ground-level ozone is becoming an issue. While it's helpful for blocking harmful radiation in the sky, ozone at the ground level can cause health problems, including respiratory issues and asthma. Group members are urging the community to make voluntary changes to reduce ozone levels, before the EPA steps in with mandatory changes.
"Obviously, if they have to mandate new regulations upon any kind of business or industry, then that cost is going to be passed on to consumers. So it can certainly be more costly," said Dan Pekarek, Joplin Health Director.
Suggested changes include reducing idling time in your car and cutting energy use. For more information, click here.
