Fern Holland Celebration

MIAMI, OK--- Miami community members gather to celebrate what they call, one of their hometown heroes. Fern Holland was born and raised in Miami, and dedicated her life to womens' rights and building democracy in Africa and Iraq.

She was killed in Iraq in 2004. A decade later, her friends and families still honor her life by celebrating all of the work she did at home and abroad.

"She fought for the human rights of individuals that were being trampled by various offenders, whether they be the state or individuals. We feel like she's such a role model to us," explains DeeDee Cox, an organizer of the event.

"We were classmates and she's from Miami, Oklahoma and I would say pride and you just can't believe what she was able to accomplish," says a friend of Fern Holland, Larry Reece.

The Advocacy Center in Miami is named after Fern Holland. This afternoon, her life's work was put on display at NEO College and a program was held to commemorate her life.
