Congressman Billy Long Recognizes McDonald County Student with Top Honor in Art Competition

ANDERSON, MO. --- Kelsey Thornton from McDonald County High School in Anderson is this year’s winner in Missouri’s 7th District Congressional Art Competition.

Kelsey Thornton’s winning selection is her pencil drawing entitled Awakening the Artist. Kelsey’s work will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol with other winning pieces from across the nation. Kelsey will have the opportunity to attend a ceremony in Washington, D.C., to unveil the winning artwork.

“I am always amazed at the artistic talents of the students in our district. Kelsey’s artwork will join other winning selections from across the nation. I also want to thank all the students who participated and their art instructors who encouraged that participation in this year’s competition and hope they keep up the excellent work,” Long said.

Isabel Shirey from Nixa High School in Nixa is this year’s 2nd place winner with her watercolor entitled On The James. Sidney Tyson from McDonald County High School in Anderson is this year’s 3rd place winner with a pencil drawing entitled Batting for America. The People’s Choice winner, voted by students and constituents on Long’s Facebook page, is Isabel Shirey’s 2nd place winning watercolor entitled On The James. The 2nd place, 3rd place, and People’s Choice winners will be invited to display their work in one of Long’s district offices.

The Congressional Art Competition allows members of Congress to inspire and appreciate the artistic talents of emerging artists in their congressional districts. The winning piece for Missouri’s 7th District was selected by professional artists. This year’s judges were Dr. Rebecca Burrell from Drury University, Leslie Forrester, executive director of Springfield Regional Arts Council and Bonnie Herrmann, executive director of Branson Arts Council.
