Cold Weather Pet Safety

As temperatures continue to drop, it's important to remember our four legged friends.
JOPLIN, MO.--- As temperatures continue to drop, it's important to remember our four legged friends. Lysa Boston is the shelter manager at the Joplin Humane Society. She says when the temperatures get this low, your pets can't take it. If they are staying outside, make sure they have shelter, like a dog house. It's also important to stuff it with straw so they can keep warm. Also, dogs can easily get frost bite and burns on their paws.

"The snow can build up into little balls in between the balls of their feet. It hurts their skin and walking on ice melt can be really bad. They can get burned real bad. Anti-freeze all kinds of dangers in the winter. So, keep your pet close and keep them warm," said Lysa Boston, Joplin Human Society .

The shelter is also giving away free straw to residents. Just bring in your own bag to collect it for your pet.
