CHEROKEE, KS.--- The city is asking residents to approve a 1% sales tax for retailers on the August 5th ballot. If passed, the sales tax will go into effect January 1st 2015. The proceeds from the tax will go towards paying general operation expenses in the city.
"We really want people to know that this keeps us from having to raise water rates or property taxes, that sort of thing," said Ed Burns, City Clerk.
The tax is an opportunity for Cherokee to make more revenue for the city. The money from the sales tax has potential to generate an estimated $20,000 a year.
