CARL JUNCTION, MO.--- The City of Carl Junction is looking to make an addition to Memorial Park and give it something the city has never had, a veteran memorial. City Administrator Steve Lawver is a U.S. military veteran and says, having a place to honor the men and women who have served our country will be a great asset.
"We're probably one of the few towns around here that doesn't have one. And we think it's important, we have a lot of active veterans in our town that take interest in our town, too. And they still work with us," said Steve Lawver, City Administrator of Carl Junction.
According to city leaders, the vision for Memorial Park has been in the works for a few years. They've been working with Sapp Design Associates to brainstorm a plan to move forward.
"They've talked about maybe some type of a water feature, maybe not. Walking trails, maybe some stations that trails more pavilion," said Lawver.
The city is open to community input and donations to create a better space for the park.
"People could put names on a bench, or a tree. We've got a bench now that says C.J. Culvich. We've got a pavilion that says Jean Roy Pavilion. And we got brick pavers that's going to go around this pavilion that's dedicated to people in town," said Mike Moss, Mayor of Carl Junction.
City staff say the park is often overlooked for event planning, but it's one of the most visible locations in the city.
"People are going back to having family picnics and reunions in parks, and that's what we want this park to be used for," said Mayor Moss.
"We want to make sure that the amenities we put in, are correct and that we're using the best purpose of that land," said Lawver.
City leaders hope to hear from those interested in sharing their ideas for Memorial Park at next Tuesday's city council meeting. It will be held at the Carl Junction Community Center at 7 p.m. Once the planning phase is over, the city hopes to start improving the park by next year.
