Joplin swimmers try to break a world record at the Missouri Southern State University pool.
JOPLIN, MO.--- Joplin swimmers try to break a world record at the Missouri Southern State University pool. The local swimmers were just a few of the 25,000 people around the world participating in the event.

The goal is to break the world record for the largest swimming lesson. It was a coordinated effort with 15 countries across 5 continents. As people in Joplin were swimming in the morning, some people were getting a lesson in the middle of the night.

"At the exact same time, we were learning how to float someone while on the other side of the world they were also learning how to float," said Heather Arnold, MSSU Director of Aquatics.

It will be a few weeks before the Joplin swimmers find out if they did break the record
