JOPLIN, MO.--- They're often overlooked at hospitals, but this week is National Nurses Appreciation Week. Michele Burge is a nurse at the Independent Living Center in Joplin. She travels several hundred miles a week visiting patients in their homes to check up on them. She checks peoples vitals, assists with their medication and also is just a friend. Burge visits 27 clients a week and they say she's a life saver.
"Should have a special week so people can honor them and give them the respect they deserve," said Jimmy Cline, Independent Living Center Patient.
Many of the patients are shut-ins and this is often the only outside contact some of them get.
