MOUNT VERNON, MO.--- Tens of thousands of people are headed to Mount Vernon to celebrate their love of apple butter. 40 to 50 thousand people are expected to attend. The celebration began in 1967 and cooks prepare apple butter in large vats near the courthouse. Vendors, crafts and food are all on hand for families to enjoy the three day celebration. People from around the world come to Mount Vernon to celebrate this annual tradition.
"The kids that graduate from here, it's amazing, it is always a highlight of their life as they were growing up as youngsters, came to Apple Butter Making Day. No matter how far away they get, they always come back and visit," said Gene Ingle, Loves Apple Butter.
The celebration wraps up on Sunday at 4 p.m.
