Being Prepared When You Hear Storm Sirens

With storm season right around the corner, emergency officials are warning you to be prepared.
CARTHAGE, MO.--- With storm season right around the corner, emergency officials are warning you to be prepared. Officials say when you hear storm sirens, you typically only have about 10 minutes to seek shelter. That's why they say you should always have a game plan in the event of an emergency. Officials recommend keeping a kit with everything you need located in the place you would take shelter.

"Items to include in a kit should be some extra clothes, some shoes, some medicine, perhaps some snack bars, water. Things that you might need throughout the day," said Keith Stammer, Jasper County Director Emergency Management.

Stammer says when you pack a kit for your shelter, you should have enough of everything to last for 72 hours. He also recommends keeping a radio and batteries on hand so you know when the area is clear.
