PITTSBURG, KS.--- Via Christi Hospital's cancer center is one of 74 hospitals in the country to receive the award. It's also the first time it's received eight out of eight honors on its accredited cancer survey. A specially trained physician evaluates and determines if the center is an accredited program. Patients in the cancer center say they're not surprised by this achievement. They tells us all the doctors and nurses are very attentive.
"I even gave them pecans last year for Christmas. I picked out a lot of pecans and gave them to all the staff. I appreciate it. I didn't think I was going to be here, yet here I am now," said Lonnie Wydick, Non Hutchinson Lymphoma Cancer Patient.
The award was presented by the American College of Surgeons. Hospital employees say this accomplishment is important because cancer patients look for an accredited facility when seeking treatment.
