JOPLIN, MO.--- Tonight marks the deadline to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. Freeman Health System's lead certified application counselor says they were booked for appointments today to help people apply for insurance. If you started the process today you may not have been able to log into the Healthcare.gov website, but you may be eligible for an extension. Camille Midcap answers questions about the health insurance marketplace.
"I would say on a normal day, we would file anywhere from 20 to 35 calls," said Camille Midcap, Lead Certified Application Counselor.
Those calls increased as the deadline to sign up for insurance drew closer.
"Then come Thursday, Friday, it's been more like 60 calls," said Camille.
Midcap is the lead certified application counselor. She says if people started signing up today, they could create an account, but not log into the Healthcare.gov website.
"A lot of people are on the website and it's just not something we could access as easily as last week," said Camille.
The Freeman grant project coordinator says people may get an extension in a special enrollment period if the website limits them from filling out an application.
"Really, anybody that is in line and ready to get on the website and fill out an application to get health insurance, should have an opportunity to get insurance at a later date," said Amanda Mitchell, Freeman Grant Project Coordinator.
Amanda Mitchell advises that you attempt to log on and create an account before the deadline hits.
"Get your information in the system before this evening to make sure you're in line and ready to get that insurance and then you'll find out if you'll have an extension later on to be able to purchase that insurance," said Mitchell.
The centers for Medicaid and Medicare services have not clarified the deadline for special enrollments, but they expect it to be mid-April. Special enrollment is not guaranteed. The deadline to sign up is tonight at midnight Eastern time, 11 p.m. Central time.
