JOPLIN, MO.--- Remington Murray is no stranger to Freeman West. She spent long hours volunteering there last summer.
"I came in, in the morning and I would go into the laundry room and get clothes. And I would take them to the patients and like linens and stuff. If they needed water, I would see if they needed that or I would just talk to them if they needed someone to talk to," said Remington Murray, Volunteer.
"It makes a huge difference. Some people don't have friends and family that come see them. And they're all alone. So when we have people like Remington that come in to visit, it really perks up their day," said Sarah Whitten, Freeman Nurse Tech.
"I would just come in and ask them how their day was going. And sometimes they would talk to me about you know, when they were little. Or there were some older ladies that would talk about that or their husbands. They would just talk about things that were on their mind, just to kind of forget what was going on," said Murray.
"She was a great help to everyone. She helped the unit secretary. She would help me on occasion. She helped the nurses, helped the techs. She jumped in and did whatever needed, whenever," said Stacy Burkhart, Freeman Social Services.
Remington is a recent graduate of Riverton High School, in what was a very busy senior year.
"Well, I did volleyball. I did the play, I was in student government and National Honor Society as well as Math Club. I think, I had many activities," she said.
She wouldn't trade the time she spent at the hospital, helping others and helping herself.
"I really wanted to know if the medical field was something I wanted to pursue, and it helped me decide that I did," she said.
Remington plans to enroll at Missouri Southern this fall, then go to KU Medical School down the road and eventually go into the medical field as a pediatrician.
