City of Neosho Winter Storm Response

NEOSHO, MO--- RELEASED FROM PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

Neosho streets were still mostly snow-covered as of noon Friday, though city work crews hoped to take advantage of a break in the weather to catch up.

City Public Works Department employees worked through the night Thursday salting and plowing the streets, but steady snowfall on top of the packed accumulation meant driving remained potentially hazardous that morning.

All of the emergency snow routes – the main thoroughfares that lead to and from emergency services, such as hospital, police, and fire, as well as those that provide general access to the side streets leading into the neighborhoods – had been plowed and salted, but were not clear as of noon Friday. Public Works Director Mike Hightower said there were a few spots that were clear down to the asphalt, but not many. He said crews were trying to take advantage of a mid-morning break in the weather to catch up.

Some residential neighborhoods outside of the emergency routes had been plowed and salted, but were also not rated clear as of noon Friday.

“Streets are passable, but drivers need to be extra careful,” Hightower said.

Hightower said that Public Works crews would again work through the night on Friday and continue clearing the streets Saturday morning. He said his department is also planning for projected snowfall on Sunday.

As of Friday afternoon, Public Works was still operating short one snow plow, due to mechanical problems.

Waste Corporation of America, who contracts with Neosho for trash service, notified the city at approximately 4:30 p.m. Thursday that garbage would not be picked up on Friday due to the snow. If trash pick up is possible on Monday, WCA will run two trucks to cover both the Friday and Monday routes, if weather allows.

Neosho City Hall remained open at normal business hours on Friday.
