CARTHAGE, MO.--- Hundreds of surplus items will be hitting the auction block next month. The auction is made up of surplus items from the City of Carthage, and the county. Items range from office supplies and vehicles to dozens of unclaimed bicycles. The annual effort gives bidders a chance to get some great deals and makes some money for the City of Carthage, Jasper County and Carthage schools. Workers say it's less about the money and more about getting rid of surplus equipment.
"It doesn't generate a whole lot of money for the city, but it does help clean out the buildings where we're storing all these and free up space for the next wave that comes through. Because we do this pretty much regularly every year," said Tom Short, Carthage City Administrator.
The auction will be held Monday, October 7th at 3:00 p.m. at the parking lot of the Carthage Junior High Auditorium.
