JOPLIN, MO.--- Dozens of families come together to break an unusual type of record tonight. Mercy Hospital Joplin teamed up with Calvary Baptist Church to build the world's largest blanket fort, all for a good cause. The blankets used to build the structure will be donated to the Watered Gardens Mission, who will then hand them out to Joplin residents in need.
"We talked to Watered Gardens and said, 'can you guys use 100 blankets if we can get them?' And they said, 'we can use a thousand blankets to warm people during the winter," said Herb Young, Calvary Baptist Church Pastor.
Members of Calvary Baptist Church came up with a unique way to help meet the needs of a local charity.
"We're building the world's largest blanket fort," said Young.
"There's a lot of need out there in the communities. With this cooler weather coming in, there's a lot of people that an extra blanket or two can make a big difference for them," said Scott Hamilton, D.O. Mercy Hospital.
Blankets stretched across chairs, filling the sanctuary. Families working together to build the worlds largest fort. It's a strange record to compete against, currently in the books at 475 feet in length.
"We're actually going to try to break this record, and set a new record," said Young.
With hundreds of blanket donations, the final product was a zig-zag formation, more than 700 feet long. For these participants, the accomplishment meant something more than breaking a record.
"Making sure that folks who have a need, that we can do everything we can to meet that need, and their physical need and warm their bodies as well as have a wonderful message of hope for them," said Young.
Organizers say this was just a fun way for families to give back to the community, it only took them about an hour to complete the project.
