JOPLIN, MO.--- A Joplin West Central Elementary School 4th grader is getting national attention for her reading skills. Karen Alvarado has been named a National Scholastic All Star. She came to the United States from Mexico in the 2nd grade without being able to speak English.

She is now is at the top of her class and speaks fluent English. She beat out thousands of students for the award and will receive a scholarship for $1,200 from Scholastic. Karen says it's fun to read and does it every night before bed.

"I don't sleep at night without reading. I have to have stacks of books at my bed," said Karen Alvarado, West Central Elementary School.

A school assembly will be held in a couple weeks to honor Karen's award. She says when she grows up she'd like to be an FBI agent or a teacher.
