Avoid Pitfalls When Filing Taxes

Tax season is right around the corner, and local experts have tips on how you can avoid pitfalls when filing taxes this year.
JOPLIN, MO -- Tax season is right around the corner, and local experts have tips on how you can avoid pitfalls when filing taxes this year. A big issue they see is self-employed people who forget to keep track of their mileage - writing it off as a deduction. They say it's important to keep a log so the IRS has proof.

Tax preparers say they also see clients with confusion about earned income credit. IRS requires tax preparers to qualify the credit, meaning they need proof of both residence and custody of any children claimed when filing taxes.

Tax preparers say it's important to make sure you have all your forms and double check to make sure they're accurate before you file taxes.
