2014 Golden Lion Award Winner

Lauran White is recognized for her dedication to the community through the Carl Junction Leo Club.
CARL JUNCITON, MO.--- Tonight, we take a look at the January winner of the Golden Lion Award. Missouri Southern and KODE are recognizing Lauran White for her dedication to the community through the Carl Junction Leo Club.

Lauran White is giving up her Saturday night to serve others.

"A wounded warriors' dinner, which was run by Peterson Outdoor Ministries, and they asked us to serve dinner," said Lauran White, Carl Junction High School Junior.

The Carl Junction High School junior is a member of the Leo Club, volunteering more than 10 hours a month for a wide range of groups

"Backpack is once a week, and then we had started or we did do rotations. We had four different groups, and we'd go one group one week, one group the next. And we've now changed to a third Saturday service to where we'll just spend all Saturday doing something for a certain place," said White.

The 16 year old says she finds something to enjoy with each volunteering opportunity, but the Joplin Humane Society may be her favorite.

"We'll walk the dogs around the outside part in the back and sit and pet with the cats. The first time we went, we helped with laundry and stuff. We helped fold everything up in their back room, sorted the leashes out for the dogs," said White.

While it all means less free time, Lauran says she feels like she is benefitting from her service.

"I feel like I've grown as a person, like it makes me happy when other people are happy about what we helped them with doing," said White.
