JOPLIN, MO.--- Police officers are reminding you to be cautious of the hundreds of runners hitting the streets Sunday for the Mother Road Marathon. The route for the Mother Road Marathon begins in Commerce, Oklahoma and will make its way along Highway 69. The highway will be closed starting around 5:30 am, but as the runners clear the course, officers will reopen it. In Joplin, Tri-State Road and 1st Street off of Schifferdecker will be closed. The shoulder along 7th Street from Tri-State Road west to state line will be blocked off with cones.
"One of the things we're really proud of is the safety and security of the route. We want people to be courteous of the runners and understand this is a large event for the city," said Lt. Darren Gallup, Joplin Police Department.
Lt. Gallup says roads around the Joplin Athletic Complex will be effected in the morning, due to buses getting in and out to transport runners to their starting points.
