WEBB CITY, MO.--- "You see some construction being done. We're rearranging some sewer lines. Had to move some gas lines, but things are progressing rather well," said Dr. Tony Rossetti, Superintendent Webb City Schools.

Webb City Jr. High's new safe room is coming along as scheduled. The walls and roof are now secured into place.

"So you have these solid walls. Well, those have been put into place and now they're doing, they're going to pour the concrete floor for the first level, and then they'll begin also on the connection piece from the structure itself to the original building," said Dr. Rossetti.

Superintendent Dr. Tony Rossetti says more construction is on tap for next month.

"The second level being placed in, the mezzanine level. As well as the interior starting to be worked on. Each of the safe rooms has its own set of restrooms and its own backup generator. So those will be put into place as well," he said.

The space will not simply serve as a place for shelter, but will take on other roles as well.

"It's a safe room, it's a community safe room, and it's also a going to be a media center for us," he said.

It's not just for students, but also to give residents peace of mind. Pet Salon Owner Jean Kelly says the new safe room is a great addition for the community.

"It's been nice to have the area cleaned up and a sense of community. Sense of safety goes along way. I just hope they let me take the dogs over," said Jean Kelly, Pet Salon Owner.

The building will be one of seven safe rooms in the school district and will hold close to 1,200 people.

"We're just thrilled to have the opportunity to have our kids go to a safe place by the time storm season comes in," said Dr. Rossetti.

The safe room is expected to be complete by late October, early November.
