Vernon County (MO)- The Vernon County Sheriff's Office wants to make sure everyone has something to eat this holiday season.
All this month, the sheriff's office has been collecting food to pass out to people in the community. It started out as a tradition four years ago, when deputies invited kids in the county to come and enjoy a warm meal with them. Staff decided to change things and collect food in hopes they could serve more people.
Last year this effort helped more than two dozen families and the office hopes to help more this year. The office is mainly accepting non-perishable food items, but say anything will be appreciated.
"We've had people bring in candy canes and cookies, things that they'll like Christmas morning and think ‘well, I've got something good to eat,’" says Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher.
The sheriff's office will be collecting food until this Friday.
