"Storenado" teaching students valuable lessons

Your Christmas shopping could help teach Field Kindley High School students in Coffeyville some valuable lessons.

High school junior Sydney Coons is a big part of making sure this store has a successful year.

Sydney Coons, Junior, Field Kindley High School: "We design shirt designs, and also like the cup designs and other merchandise designs."

But she's just one part of the team of students that run the “Storenado” inside of Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville.

Brendan Murdock, Graphics Teacher, Field Kindley High School: "The kids do everything from the graphic design of it, to the manufacturing, to actually the marketing and selling of it."

Graphics Teacher Brendan Murdock says in this case, necessity was the mother of invention.

Brendan Murdock, Graphics Teacher, Field Kindley High School: "We didn't have a whole lot of places to buy golden tornado gear, so it filled a void, or it filled a need, actually, for what we needed to have happen."

But the Storenado is more than a retail outlet.  it's a classroom, where the kids are getting hands on experience, and learning to work as a team.

Travis Stalford, Lead Principal, Field Kindley High School: "And that's what you've got to love about public schools, kids get to learn to work together, and that's something that's not just in an academic atmosphere, it's in the curriculum, you know, that's something that you've got to create."

While they may not realize it, the students are getting a head start on their future.

Travis Stalford, Lead Principal, Field Kindley High School: "We want our kids to be ready for high wage, high demand jobs."

Support from the community has been high since the store opened three years ago.

Brendan Murdock, Graphics Teacher, Field Kindley High School: "It's always nice to see the positive outcome, and the kids love to see their stuff on other people."

And their time in the Storenado is starting to have an impact in other classes as well.

Sydney Coons, Junior, Field Kindley High School: "Before, in graphics one, we had tutorials, and I read that, and I put that into my work, and so now in other classes I've learned that I should read the instructions better, so I better learn the material."

The Storenado will be open at every home basketball game at Field Kindley High School. They plan on opening to the community during the last week before the Christmas break from around three in the afternoon through five to let residents do some Christmas shopping.
