PITTSBURG, KS.--- Pittsburg State University and the P-3 Committee is donating 200 beds and 50 mattresses to the Caring for Kids Organization.
"I think everybody's just so thankful to get them. And all of the community helps out immensely," said Ann Elliott, Executive Director at Family Resource Center and P-3 Member.
PSU is in the process of renovating the Dellinger Dorm on campus, and wanted to give the beds to local families. Student-athletes from PSU and Pittsburg High School moved the beds and mattresses from the dorm to the Family Resource Center.
"I like it, because I know there are a lot of people in our community that don't have a place to go home and have a bed to sleep in. So if we can give a kid a bed, or a person a bed, it gives you a good feeling," said Trevor Kent, PHS Sophomore Football Player.
The athletes put their strength to good use when it came to loading and unloading the beds. By using team work and creating assembly lines, the students were able to get the job done.
"It's a good thing for the community, but it's a bonding time for us, let's us go do something together outside of practice," said Kent.
Bedding, pillows, and mattress toppers are also being donated by community members. PSU Linebacker Tyler Disney says helping families in the community receive beds is rewarding.
"I really didn't understand the magnitude of it until I got here. They said, they kind of explained to me what we were doing. I was just told to be here and move some beds and get out. But I didn't realize there were that many kids in Pittsburg that didn't have a place to sleep, so that really kind of hits home," said Tyler Disney, PSU Linebacker.
Families can sign up for beds during enrollment at Pittsburg High School on August 4th. The beds will be delivered to the kids before the start of the school year.
