Missouri Southern State University is officially the new owner of the old Joplin public library.
Joplin city leaders passed an ordinance tonight giving MSSU six years to renovate the building and move in. They hope to close on this deal by March of 2018.
The plan for the old library is to move multiple MSSU education programs over to the new facility. But first the school will need to do some fundraising.
"We believe it will be between 8 and 10 million dollars for construction now that does depend on what academic programs end up occupying the space but our architects believe it will be between 8 and 10 million dollars," said Brad Hodson, from the. Missouri Southern Foundation
Barbara Gollhofer was also named the new city clerk at tonight's meeting. She'll take over the position starting in January. City leaders also voted to grant Ajinomoto, the frozen foods manufacturing plant, more than $10 million dollars for additional costs in construction.
The frozen foods plant requested the money to meet health standards and purchase more equipment for production.
