MIAMI, OK.--- A 4th of July 5K Fun Run was held outside of the Miami Friends Church. About 80 people ran the race, to both stay healthy this holiday weekend and help out a good cause.

"We run for food for the area families, to help them through hard times," said Donnie Bigby, 5K Sponsor.

Those participating were required to bring one bag of groceries for the Ottawa County Nutrition Coalition, because the race is in honor of Independence Day, a portion of the food donations will also go to U.S. military veterans.

"We probably could never ever give back as much, but you know our veterans, the people that have died for our country, that fought for our country. And it's a way to celebrate that, along with this run," said Bigby.

The 5K wasn't limited to just running and walking. Some participants rode their bikes, scooters, and one guy even rode a unicycle.

"I got a little tired, but I just kept on going," said Cadence Frazier, Bicycle 5K Participant.

This wasn't the first time John Gray rode his unicycle in a 5K. He says during his last 5K he fell off multiple times, but this year he beat his goal by only falling off once.

"It was definitely extremely exhausting. I've got Jello legs right now, I'm having a hard time standing up. Like I said, it's a lot more mental than physical," said John Gray, Unicycle 5K Participant.

Nicole Ballard was the first runner to cross the finish line. She came from Kansas to run the 5K and says she enjoys supporting the community.

"I was kind of tired, but it gives me a lot of energy, and I don't know, encouragement I guess," said Nicole Ballard, Runner 5K Participant.

Although this was the first year the Miami Friends Church held the 4th of July 5K Fun Run, members say it will not be the last. The church has a similar 5K Turkey Trot in November, that also encourages food donations.
