Leaving a children or animal inside a hot car can lead to a heat stroke and possibly death.
Penalties for leaving children or animals inside a hot car includes fines, possible jail time, and having your kids and animals taken away.
Galena Police Department Sergeant Robert Hughes said the temperature inside the car can be up to 20 degrees hotter than outside.
"Don't take very long for these heat symptoms and sicknesses to appear from the heat," Sgt. Hughes said. "It can damage, damage your body, physically. The heat can also kill you."
If you see a child or animal locked in a parked car for more than 5 minutes, check to see if they are responsive and call 911.
