JOPLIN, MO.-- A lawsuit against members of the City of Joplin and Joplin Police Department is heading to federal court. The family of Brooke Russell is suing the City of Joplin, Joplin Police Department, and two police officers for damages. The suit stems from her death following a self inflicted gun shot wound.

Russell's father and brother were arrested while emergency responders were transporting her to the hospital following the shooting. City prosecutors claimed Brant and Kevin Russell interfered with emergency responders. Earlier this month, the Russell's filed suit against the police department in Jasper County court. Yesterday, an attorney representing the city moved the suit to federal district court in Springfield.
