JOPLIN, MO.--- A third quarter breakdown shows significant increases in construction, auto sales, and discount stores. Tourism may also play a role in the trend with the hotel and motel business growing 37%. That's a difference of about $30,000.

"Hotels do collect sales tax. Most of that would be coming from visitors to our community. So that helps our economy," said Leslie Haase, Joplin Finance Director.

Other smaller increases include mall stores and restaurants, as well as convenience store sales. Joplin has totaled $6.8 million in sales tax revenue in the third quarter of fiscal year 2014.
