Joplin Humane Society holds "Dog Days of Summer" adopt-a-thon

The Joplin Humane Society always has a wide range of animals needing homes. But tomorrow local residents will have a unique opportunity to take home a shelter pet.

One of these animals can be yours tomorrow for free. The Joplin Humane Society and KODE are presenting the annual "Dog Days of Summer" adopt-a-thon.

"It's an opportunity for us here at the shelter to promote all of the amazing pets we have for available for adoption. All of the pets are available at a fee, free to a good home as long as you have an approved application,” says Tianna Fischer.

Tianna Fischer shared the mission behind the event.

"We have it every year because we want to get as many animals into forever-loving homes as we possibly can. That's the goal here at the shelter; is to make sure every pet has a family that loves them,” says Fischer.

While the shelter is always busy, this adopt-a-thon can be an especially hectic time for staff.

"Dog days of summer adoption day is extra especially busy so we're really excited about that. Everybody will be here working. We have volunteers coming in to help so it's definitely a busy, busy time of year,” says Fischer.

Don't let the title of the adopt-a-thon mislead you. Although the program is called “Dog Days of Summer,” don't forget about your other furry friends.

The event lasts from noon to 7 pm on Friday. We will be live from the Humane Society in all of our newscasts to help you preview the animals up for adoption.
