JOPLIN, MO.--- If you haven't checked the calendar, today is Cinco De Mayo and humans aren't the only ones celebrating the holiday. The Joplin Humane Society has been hosting a Cinco De Mayo celebration. People have a chance to get lower adoption rates by pulling a special coin from a pinata.

The normal adoption rate is $85 for older animals and $100 for puppies, those prices are then cut in half if the right coin is pulled. Since Friday, shelter workers have noticed adoptions have been up 20%. They say promotions like this help get animals into new homes.

"I think any promotion, no matter how silly that brings awareness to the animals that we have here at the shelter is win, win. It gets people to say, 'hey there's a shelter there with great pets and it finds them great homes," said Lysa Boston, Shelter Manager.

The shelter is always needing a donation of supplies. Currently, they are running low on canned puppy and kitten food.
