Joplin Boys and Girls Club Receives the Gateway to Impact Award
JOPLIN, MO.--- A local organization is recognized for its work in the community. Two words are proudly displayed on the Boys and Girls Club t-shirts, and it's a message employees hope kids will catch onto, "be great."
"If a kid enters the club, they're less likely to get in trouble. They're more likely to raise their grades in school, so we're very excited that we're impacting Joplin," said Rhonda Gorham, Boys and Girls Club Executive Director.
Now, the organization has an award to prove its succeeding in its mission, earning the "Gateway to Impact" award.
"It's quite an honor for us to receive this award. It just really means that we're providing impact to this community and growth in our club, and that just thrills us," said Gorham.
The award recognizes the club for the number of kids who go each day and how its space is used.
"Our growth has just been amazing with our kids. What we're seeing is kids are staying longer hours more days of the week," said Gorham.
Only three clubs out of 14 in Missouri were recognized, and children seem to get a lot accomplished in one place
"They get to play a little kickball, get their homework done, they get a hot meal and have a lot of fun while they're here," said Gorham.
Giving kids like Madison Corl a safe place to go after school.
"My mom's always working, and I have no where else to go, and there's a lot of activities here," said Madison Corl, Attends Boys and Girls Club.
All this while learning some important lessons.
"Not to bully people, and it's an easier way to make friends. And how to be quiet, because I'm a talker," said Corl.
