JOPLIN, MO.--- Currently, a $2 court fee is paid from any civil or criminal violation when a person is convicted in Jasper County courts. Today, the commission approved raising that fee to $4. Lafayette asked for the increase after Governor Nixon signed House Bill 1238, allowing counties to increase the fee up to $4. This money supports the women and children affected by domestic violence and seeking shelter at the Lafayette House.

"Obviously, they're providing free service and it's got to be funded some way, and that's just one way to fund it," said John Bartosh, Jasper County Presiding Commissioner.

The Lafayette House's executive director says the fee has not increased since 2000, while the cost to manage the shelter has grown. She adds they are grateful for the approval.
