J-HAP Prepares to Relocate

JOPLIN, MO.--- The Joplin Homebuyer Assistance Program is relocating their offices to 519 South Main. J-HAP employees say they wanted a more central location in order to attract more buyers. 

"It's more inviting to applicants that are hoping to apply to the program," said Patrick Clark, Planning and Community Development Specialist

Since the May 2011 tornado, J-HAP has successfully provided more than $3 million in assistance to home buyers in Joplin. The organization helps repopulate the tornado affected areas, assisting with down payments and closing costs, as well as helping homeowners build equity in their homes. 

"It's a really rare opportunity to see a program like this. There's a lot of assistance awarded to down payments, move into the tornado affected area," said Clark. 

J-HAP receives funding from a 2011 community development block grant-disaster recovery award. Home buyers eligible for the program may receive anywhere between $1,000 and $30,000 toward the down payment.

"Offering that down payment assistance that, most borrowers don't have. And, it allows those borrowers to get into a home and not have to pay mortgage insurance," said Kristen Sweet, Mortgage Loan Officer for Arvest Bank.

J-HAP employees say recently they have received 300 applicants and over 100 of those applicants are eligible for a new home. 

"It's a lot of interest from lenders and also local community members. They've been great at getting the word out there that this program is available, and we've also received high interest from the public as well," said Clark.
