Irving Elementary School Super Bowl Parent and Student Night
JOPLIN, MO.---A local elementary school has its own version of the Super Bowl a little more than a week before the big game. They were there for a Super Bowl themed parent and student night. The goal of the event was to promote literacy while giving kids the chance to bond with their parents and teachers.
"In the cafeteria, we have a whole bunch of activities for parents to do with their children. Also, this evening is Super Bowl night, so we're wearing our jerseys and all of our centers are around football themes," said Nila Vance, Irving Elementary Pricipal.
The Super Bowl is a popular topic for football fans and kids alike. What might not seem as cool for a young student is reading, so Irving Elementary administrators created a Super Bowl-themed night designed to help kids become more interested in cracking open a book.
"Sometimes it gets boring to learn, and now that everyone comes together in one group it's more fun," said Llian Hunt, 5th Grade Student.
As parents and students gather around reading stations, it's not just the kids learning a new lesson.
"Literacy is important. It's an indicator of success for their future, and parents want to help their kids read," said Vance.
Administrators say many parents want to help their children become better readers, but aren't sure where to start.
"So this is a way we can work on those skills at home with those parents, so they can take them home and do those activities at home," said Vance.
It's also a chance for kids to show off their brand new school.
"A lot of times, parents work during the day and they don't have the opportunity to spend time with them at school. So this is a way to bring their parents to school and show them what they do during their day at work," said Vance.
This is the first parent night at the new Irving Elementary School since it opened a few weeks ago.
